Who We Are

A Christian school in downtown Winnipeg

Our mission is to provide an affordable, Christian education for newcomers in the city of Winnipeg. We primarily serve the community of Christian refugees from various African countries

We are followers of Jesus

We believe education should produce disciples of Jesus

We are church based

Our 4 local churches surround Winnipeg.

We are guided by these churches and supported by many believers across North America.

Working together with our brothers and sisters, we can serve Christ by serving our generation

What We Do

Christian Education

Our goal is to provide sound Christian values coupled with a strong educational experience.

We care about education, but we care more about the soul.

Primarily, we are investing in the kingdom of God. Secondarily, we are offering a solid education for grades one through twelve.

School happens 8 hours a day. That’s 40 hours a week of discipleship.

→   Education shapes your worldview.

→   Education shapes your character.

Jesus said, “Everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.”

A child’s education may last a lifetime, but their soul will last forever.

Affordable Education

We partner with our donors and volunteers to make quality, Christian education accessible to all.

Newcomers to Canada often struggle with finding employment.

→   For some, the conflict in their home countries deprived them of educational opportunities.

→   For others, the language barrier makes it difficult to find employment.

Many newcomers find it difficult to afford expensive, private schools for their children.

How We Work

Discipleship

→  We teach Christ as the standard for life.

→  We teach the Bible as instruction for life.

→  We work to develop character in our students.

We integrate the teachings of the Bible into everyday life, and train students to be self-disciplined, take responsibility, and develop Christlike character.

Curriculum

→   Anabaptist

→   Bible-based

→   Christ-Centered

Academically, the curriculum we use is equivalent to the Manitoba standard.

Biblical principles are taught through the curriculum, in class discussions, and through extracurricular activities.

Most of the curriculum we use is from Christian Light Education

Affordable Tuition

→   We offer discounted tuition for lower income families.

→   We offer discounts for large families.

We assess each family’s income and provide affordable tuition accordingly. This often requires subsidizing part of the tuition costs. We can do this by partnering with donors and volunteers.

Our History

It didn't start with a school...

Over a decade ago, a group of young people realized they wanted to share what Christ has done in their lives. One Sunday afternoon they headed off to Portage Avenue in downtown Winnipeg. The afternoon was spent singing and handing out tracts. This outing led to an organized street ministry.

Street Ministry participants would hand out tracts at bus stops like this one on Main Street
Central Park, where we first met Christian immigrant families

Central Park was an important discovery for the fledgling street ministry. Central park is a patch of green in the urban jungle of downtown Winnipeg. It’s a hub for a variety of activities and people. Druggies and drunkards stumble through the park. Newcomers, who live in the area, flock there to play soccer and visit on the benches. Central Park is a place where the two contrary scenes meet. Immigrant families and addicts.

The new ministry in Central Park helped to change the environment. Police reported that the violence was declining because of the positive influence. Families were finding the park a safer place to play.

The interaction with the people in the park led to relationships with newcomer families. These families were Christians from various African countries. Meeting them led to awareness of a need for alternative education. The downtown environment wasn’t the only danger these families were facing.

Many of the immigrant families Street Ministry met had anticipated a Christian country. But the values of the public school system was working against their Christian values. They needed an affordable alternative. An alternative that would contribute to their values instead of subtracting from them.

Many of the immigrant families met at Street Ministry longed for an environment where their values could be nurtured instead of neglected.

The Street Ministry young people were becoming increasingly aware of the desire for a Christian School. They brought this need to their local church brotherhood. The idea was met with a lot of support, and within a short time the church approved a floating board of thirteen members to oversee the new mission.

Then we tried to find a building...

The search for a school building began in the summer of 2008. By August, The first staff had already moved into their apartments in the downtown, and parents had committed to sending their children to school, but still, there was no school building.

Finally, just before the school year began, after hours of prayer and searching, we found the Sudanese Center on Dagmar Street.

In September 2008 it became our first school building

There were ten students and three teachers that first year. Ten years later, enrollments have climbed to nearly sixty.

The school board has grown to include representatives from our four churches in Manitoba, and teachers have come from the north and south, from Alberta to Texas, to experience the joys of teaching children of other nationalities.

Although there are definite and unique challenges that accompany this ministry, the school has a flair of culture that teachers find exciting, as they learn to enjoy African cuisine and the animated personalities of their students.
