The Students Speak

A drop of ink may make a million people think –Lord Byron

Why do we write? This question is often asked by students. It demands a good answer because we can all attest to the fact of how the spoken and written word has impacted us.

Yes, we write for fun, simply to entertain. To say, “Thank You.” To relay experiences. Or to share thoughts and feelings.

More importantly, words can change the destiny of a person, of a society, or of a nation. Words have power.

We must write. We must be able to speak and write truth. In the world where our minds and ears are filled continually with lies, there is a need for the next generation to be equipped with the tools needed in making His name great. Students must learn to be capable communicators of His truth. Thus, we teach writing.

One of my students’ writing assignments this year was to write a newspaper article.

We have had a good school year, despite limited outings and field trips due to COVID restrictions. We decided to create our own fun right here at school. The sixth-grade class is putting out this newspaper to let you in on some of our activities and festivities. Sit back and enjoy a bit of “good news” for a change.     -Miss Lisa

First Year Students at HCS by Delina Yimesgen

Delina (right) with her new friend Agape

A lot of new students came to HCS this year. In some ways it was hard to adjust, and in other ways, it was fun and easy.

I asked Agape why she came to Hosanna Christian School. She said, “My dad wanted me to learn about God, and public schools don’t teach the Bible.” Abigail, a student at HCS, had already told her a bit about the school, so HCS wasn’t a completely new place.

I also asked the new students what their favorite and least favorite part of the school is. Even, another new student, enjoys doing math because “It’s easy”, but despises L.A because of how dreadfully hard English is. Agape enjoys science experiments, but agrees with Even when it comes to L.A.

Agape’s first impression of the school, was that it was a bit strange and scary with all the new policies. She has now gotten over her fears, and is having fun at school. Since the new point system policy came into effect, I wanted to see a fresh opinion on it, so I asked the new students what they thought of it. Even said he’s ok with it because it lets him go for honor roll. Agape also likes the point system because it’s easy to track her progress.

Making friends at a new school is hard. How are the new students coping? Although Agape already knew Abigail, Sesina, and I (Delina) before school began, she still found it hard to fit in. Evan didn’t have too much of a hard time fitting in, and likes his class (even though Isaiah is clearly his favorite).

Transferring into a different school is kind of hard, so I’m glad these new students are not finding it impossible to happily exist at our small school.

Winter Fun Day by Moriah Yohannes

Right now I have an interview with Crystal Yohannes and Yedidya Mozazghi. They will be telling us their perspective in Winter Fun Day.

I asked both their opinion of that day. They both replied with, “It was Fun.” They had different games they played. Crystal played White Elephant, Secret Santa, and Candy Cane Treasure Hunt with the rest of her class.

Yedidya played Present Exchange, Food Auction, Musical Chair, Fruit Basket and other games with his class.

The food Yedidya and Crystal ate on that day was pizza and juice. Yedidya’s favorite pizza is pepperoni and jalapeno. Crystal favorite is cheese pizza. (Pretty plain to be a favorite).

A bad thing that happened to each of them at that time was…

Yedidya remembering his grandma, cause she’s in danger right now .

Crystal, to be honest there was nothing wrong with her. But may we pray for Yedidya’s grandma.

Now I ask them, “What is something that could’ve ruined your day?”

Yedidya replies, “If there was a power outage, if I got injured, or if the snow melted.” Crystal said, “If the power went out and if we played hide’n’seek while we waited.”

In spite of that, they had lots of fun.

Honor Roll by Christian Tesfay

Winners of the HCS snow sculpture competition

Ahhh, the sounds of laughter, the enormous smiles that appear on children’s faces. Can you name that event?…….Honor roll!

If you do not know what honor roll is, well, you came to the right place. In H.C.S (Hosanna Christian School), we do an event that takes place every 10 weeks for the best students. Mr. Waldner explained, “Honor roll is a reward for students that have good grades and try their hardest.”

You might be wondering what honor roll is. It’s easy. Every week you will be given a point sheet. If you want to go to honor roll, you need to get at least 70 points a week. That includes being punctual, no failed tests, clean, neat uniform, perfect attendance, and less than five demerits. At the 10th week, you will get at least 700 points and be able to attend honor roll. Esay, who made it to both 1st and 2nd honor roll, advised, “Work your hardest and never give up. Don’t look down, only up.”

When you go to honor roll, you will play games, eat pizza, drink juice, and roast marshmallows. You don’t want to miss out on that. Mr. Waldner remarked, ”I like the chance for the student to work. They know that in a few weeks honor roll is coming up, so they will work their hardest and will have fun on honor roll.”

Bible Competition by John-Paul Adeniran

Thomas diligently doing his bible memory

Every quarter of the school year, the school arranges an event called the ‘’BIBLE COMPETITION’’. We spend an entire quarter studying a chapter of the bible, and by the end of the quarter we have the ‘’BIBLE COMPETITION’’!

The bible competition works by the following arrangement. First, the class or selected team goes to a station. Then the teacher or the director of the station asks the students questions from the chapter they studied that quarter. There are different stations such as: Bible Trivia station, Spelling station, and Verse to Number station. The director of the station will either ask the students questions or quiz them to recite a specific verse in the chapter. For every question the students get right, they receive five points. When they are done, they move on to the next station.

After the competition, the teachers add up the points each team got, and announce the scores. The winning team gets Tim Horton’s Timbits and hot chocolate. Here are the responses to the bible competition.

Joseph’s reply: “It felt good to win. At first, we (Gr4&5) were nervous and there was tension in the air, but in the end, we won. That was surprising.

Yedidya’s reply: “I really expected us (Gr 6) to win, but it seems like we’ll have to try harder next time.

Thanksgiving Feast by Isaiah Abodigin

Last school year, HCS started a tradition… a Thanksgiving Feast! Around Thanksgiving time, Miss Lisa’s class prepares food that you have at Thanksgiving. So, I Isaiah, interviewed John Paul, a server at this years Thanksgiving feast, and Samuel, a student from the high school class.

The feast works like this. You come out with your class and get served by the 6th graders. Then you sit down and eat. I asked Samuel and John Paul, ‘’Did you like your table?’’ Both said, “Yes’’. While eating, you get amused by the plays or songs preformed by the other classes. This year’s laugh was when Joseph mispronounced ‘society’. John Paul had a laugh at it, but Samuel not so much. Samuel didn’t like any of the plays and didn’t find anything amusing. The turkey was a big success at the feast. John Paul said, ‘’ It was juicy, delicious, and perfect.’’ Samuel agreed with that assessment. Decorations went smoothly and were decorative. John Paul liked them, but Samuel didn’t like them. Other prep work went nicely- like cooking and setting up tables. Eating basically sums it up, except for giving thanks to God.

Science Craze by Yedidya Mozazghi

In the beginning there were experiments. These experiments formed new substances that would change our opinions about everything scientific. As Delina would put it, “Experiments don’t always work, unless done properly. They aren’t enjoyable if they are done during recess.” Experiments are important because they help us learn and understand the things we learn in science class, and they are really fun too.

Here are some fun experiments done by some of the classes at our school. The 7th graders did an experiment to see how weight affects the speed at which things fall. They used a heavy book, cardboard, regular paper, and heavy paper. They then dropped these items all at once and watched to see which of the items hit the floor first. They learned from this that the heavier items fall faster and the lighter items that took up much space and had less mass, had fallen last. Here is another very fun and interesting experiment. The 6th graders launched a rocket just for fun because they were learning about astronomy. They used baking soda, vinegar, a spoon, a cork, an empty plastic bottle, and a piece of paper. First they took the empty bottle and poured the vinegar into the bottle. Next they put three spoonfuls of baking soda onto the piece of paper and shaped the paper into a funnel. Finally, they quickly placed the cork on the bottle. The cork popped off and the bottle shot up high into the air.

Experiments help us make different things we use every day. An experiment is not only a chemical reaction. It also shows how things work and how they respond to certain things. Experiments spark people’s curiosity about everything around them.

Natan

Nice but naughty sometimes.

Always his laugh sounds like tinkling chimes.

Though he may commit some crimes,

Always he will make up for them a thousand times.

Nothing can buy him from me, not even a million dimes.

Flies

It is hard to catch that pesky fly.

It slips and escapes my every try.

It cannot see me looking at him.

Even though he is on my limb.

I make the final swoop,

And the poor flies goes Squash and Caput!

I had taken care of that annoying spy.

The Scared Snowflake

There once was a snowflake.

He was so very terrified he began to shake.

He didn’t want to jump down,

But the upset cloud started to unhappily frown.

“Go and jump”, piped the cloud.

“Maybe you will land somewhere fun, where it’s not to loud”.

So, the scared snowflake flew.

Meanwhile his fear enlarged; the lump in his throat did too.

Then happened something sad.

Mr. Snowflake perished on the hands of a small lad.

"Quotable Quotes"

Learning about body bossing

The teacher was teaching her students not to be busy bodies. Her lessons had sunk in for one little student when she emphatically states, “ Miss, she is body bossing me.”

On social distancing

One student was quite tired of his LA book so he tells his teacher, “Miss, could you please take my LA book away from me? I need to social distance from it.”

The Mystery of the chewed up pencils

One classroom has this jar of pencils available for the students’ use. But not long into the school year, the teacher and students started noticing that some of the pencils were all chewed up on the ends and quite gross looking.

“Ok! Which one of you  is the culprit?”

In comes the chore of sanitizing, due to a certain virus. The students were instructed to sanitize everything, including the pencils in the jar that need sharpening.

“Give two sprays with the bottle,” instructs the teacher.

The student given this very important job asks his teacher, “Miss, is that why the pencils taste like soap?”
